A deadly combination of land clearing, climate change, drought, and largescale devastating bushfires is impacting Sydney’s wildlife more than ever. Urban habitat in gardens, parks, and protected bushland can provide refuges for animals at a time of crisis. Join Northern Beaches Permaculture for an evening of inspiring presentations on urban habitat protection and learn ways in which you can help our vulnerable wildlife in your own backyard and become ambassadors for protecting our last remaining habitat. Entry is by donation with all proceeds for the evening going to Wildlife Care group Sydney Metropolitan Wildlife Service to aid in the recovery of injured wildlife in their care.

The following presenters include:

Malcolm Fisher, from Save the Manly Dam Catchment Committee will be presenting about his successful community Mermaids Pool Restoration project, current threats facing manly dams remaining habitat and his own successes in RE-WILDING a Sydney Backyard. The Save Manly Dam Catchment Committee continues to be an active advocate for conserving the natural beauty of the Manly Dam Catchment and related bushland corridors against a range of ongoing threats. Malcolm and other volunteers have been highly successful in organisation of the restoration of Mermaid pool including the removal of waste material, eradication of invasive weeds and the installation of a variety of suitable nesting boxes for wildlife. Later in February, join Malcolm and PNB on our “The magic of mermaid pools” tour and bush regen workshop on Saturday 22nd 10 am.

Chris Smallbones, President of WildThings NSW is a not-for-profit organisation with the Goal “To promote, protect and enhance urban native wildlife and their required habitat in Ku-ring-gai and NSW”. Chris will take us on an inspiring presentation on a number of successful habitat protection projects which WildThings NSW has undertaken in Ku-ring-gai council. This includes such projects as the installation of natural hollows in trees for habitat, the establishment of 10 small bird habitat sites and a demonstration project on the creation of hollows in dead trees. Recently it received a council grant to promote the creation and installation of “insect hotels” within a number of locations in Ku-ring-gai during 2020. A fantastic opportunity to hear an inspiring speaker on opportunities for wildlife that could be replicated on the Northern Beaches. Visit https://www.wildthings.org.au/ for more details.

Volunteers from Sydney Metropolitan Wildlife Service will be presenting a brief presentation on how you can support wildlife and their carers in this time of need. There will be a particular focus on flying foxes and the devasting impact of extreme heat, drought, and fires that are leading to large starvation events and huge numbers of orphans coming into care. Sydney Metropolitan Wildlife Service is an entirely volunteer operated wildlife rescue and care organisation located in the greater Sydney area. Started in 1997 with roots on the Northern Beaches of Sydney.

Our public meetings are the last Thursday each month February - November 2020 at 7:30 pm at the Narrabeen Tramshed.
